The answer is of course NO. You can be a very fast driver with a controller and almost all of us started out with one. However there are advantages that a full setup brings, Immersion is a big one. So is the feedback you feel from a wheel and pedal set. So is the precision level and consistency you can achieve. Bottom line if you want to sim race its because you want to feel the thrill as close as possible – so if you stick with it you’re gonna want a full setup. Check the boards for used equipment is a good way to start.
At this time I generally Dirve on Both PS5 and Xbox but the intention is to start up on PC as soon as I can build a Rig that is suitable. With That in Mind I wanted a Setup that could handle all 3. I settled on the Fanatic DD Pro and upgraded the wheel and hub to ones I liked and that could handle both. I can recommend all below although I would probably go with the new DD Extreme today. Here is the complete setup.
- Fanatic GT DD Pro 8nm w/ Pedals
- Fanatec CSL Pedals Load Cell Kit
- Fanatec ClubSport Universal Hub V2 for Xbox
- Fanatec Podium Wheel Rim Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Leather
- Podium Button Module Endurance
- A Second Hand GTR Sim Rig (Facebook Marketplace)
- A 65in Smart Roku TV (not ideal – but works)
Honestly is about practice – but before you bite my head off, Its about practicing the right way. The very first step is to drive clean NO MATER WHAT! If you start to drive clean and respectful, it will naturally help you control the car better and lead to a better understanding of where you are on the track and in relation to others. This skill obviously translates to where you are in the corners and where your various markers are in relation to you. Keep at it and it will come.
It may be hard to say what is BEST for you, but for me, it was getting out of my own way – getting out of my head – not overthinking the drive Getting in the groove as pro drivers call it. You need to practice enough that the motions come naturally from your eye on the road to your hands on the wheel and your feet on the pedals..
Absolutely! It is amazing and Immersive. I currently use the PS5 and PSVR2 and it is so cool! Feels much more like you are there and it can even make you sick from the motion – but don’t worry you will get over it after getting accustomed to it.
